WA ‘ill prepared to handle big oil spill’

The Australian Conservation Foundation has warned Western Australia is ill prepared to cope with oil leaks the size of the current Montara spill off the state’s north-west coast.

The foundation is demanding a moratorium on oil and gas development in WA until the state is better equipped to deal with spills.

This week, the Federal Government signalled its intention to create a number of marine parks between Shark Bay and the East Kimberley.

The foundation’s Don Henry says all oil and gas mining should halt until the Commonwealth decides which areas will be protected.

“Oil spill recovery operations and the capacity for them is increased here in the Kimberley, so there needs to be more equipment, a more rapid response and more back-up responses for problems when they arise,” he said.

Mr Henry says the current Montara oil leak highlights the need for increased protection of marine environments off the north-west coast.

“There should be a moratorium on oil and gas in those Commonwealth waters until the proper marine conservation plans are in place,” he said.

“So let’s just slow down, let’s get those in place.”

Experts helping with solid, liquid waste management

Waste management experts from Australia and representatives from international companies have carried out a two-day training seminar in Quito to help Ecuadorian municipalities adopt better practices in solid- and liquid-waste management, La Hora reported.

Some 150 professionals from Ecuador’s municipal waterworks and solid-waste collection companies, NGOs, community leaders and university staff participated in the seminar, which was in response to a request sent by the Quito city government to Australia.

Harbour’s pollution hot spot revealed

A new study has delivered an alarming report card for a popular fishing waterway on the outskirts of Darwin.

Buffalo Creek has been given the worst rating in the first edition of the Darwin Harbour Report Card.

This means the creek has got the most degraded water quality in the Darwin Harbour region.

The Environment Minister, Karl Hampton, says he has not yet decided what to do to restore water quality but he will be talking to Power and Water, which releases treated effluent into Buffalo Creek.

‘Little change’ to Fraser Is lakes quality

Queensland Environment Minister Kate Jones has rejected claims the condition of lakes on Fraser Island is deteriorating.

Dr Wade Hadwen has studied the south-east Queensland lakes over a number of years and will tell a Fraser Island conference in Brisbane today that there has been a noticeable decline in water quality.

But Ms Jones says testing of the lakes for nutrient levels and algae has found there has been little change.

“The early results of tests at Lake McKenzie, Basin Lake, Lake Allom … Lake White and in particular Lake McKenzie, which is the most popular lake for visitors, is in very similar condition to what it was 11 years ago,” she said.
